A Night of Prayer and Help

Humanity to the rescue. Amid cata-strophic loss of life and subsequent heartache in the aftermath of last week's floods in Erwin and surrounding areas, good folks aim to help folks in need.

Call it A Night of Prayer and Help. Music courtesy The Benton Family Joey Strickler, and The Knight Family bonds on Friday, Oct. 4, at Canah Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Erwin, Tennessee. Free of admission, organizers ask for donations of water by the case.

The Knight Family and The Benton Family are longtime stars in the field of Southern gospel music. For instance, the latest single from The Knight Family, a declarative song of faith titled "Throne," peaked at number two on Southern gospel's national singles chart. Then there's Joey Strickler. A former police office in Sullivan County, he will perform "I was There," an apropos song for first responders.

Sunday Funday

Better to laugh than to cry. When possible.

Tears will flow come Sunday Funday. A troupe of clean comedians will appear at Paramount Bristol in downtown Bristol, Tennessee, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. Sonya White headlines. Bristol's Shaun Carter as well as Jake Hovis and Grampy provide yuks aplenty as support.

You may have heard or seen Sonya White. Her Southern style of comedy has led to appearances on MTV, Cartoon Network, "The Jerry Springer Show," Comedy Central, HBO and more. Her style, which leans heavily on real-life experiences and worldwide observations, will on occasionally raise eyebrows but rarely crosses "shesaid-what?!?" terrain. Best of all, she will make water of the right sort flow when she compels rivers of laughter.

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams

Larry Campbell played for nearly a decade in Bob Dylan's band. He was friends with and recorded alongside Levon Helm.

Tall company, indeed. When Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams honor the hallowed Down Home in Johnson City with an appearance on Friday, Oct. 11, the husband-wife duo bring decades of music made among legends.

Campbell's a New Yorker. Williams hails from Tennessee. They're harmonious marriage and music met on the resilient notes of genre-less music. Built on moving vocal harmonies and crack musicianship, neither Campbell nor Williams fit into a neat box of music. Sometimes they're rock. Other times they're bluegrass. They provide hints of country, flings with folk. In reality, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams make music they love as built on their love for each other.

If You Go WHO: Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m.

WHERE: The Down Home, 300 W. Main St., Johnson City

ADMISSION: $30

Music Notes

Now that the 23rd Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion has begun to fade into history, thoughts of next year's festival are ripe. Happens every year. When October and the season of fall renew anew, hopes in the form of conjecture and even fantasy accompany wish lists for next year's Rhythm & Roots.

So, who do you want to see next year?

Suggestions began before September's festival was even through. Dozens of people during and since last month's Rhythm & Roots have tugged my ear with an abundance of names. Their wish lists include hippie grass band Railroad Earth, country legend Emmylou Harris, former Creedence Clearwater Revival leader John Fogerty, and bluegrass stalwart Larry Sparks.

Excellent, all.

Then there are those who hope for veteran country duo The Bellamy Brothers. Frankly, their name comes up every year. Last time they visited downtown Bristol, the "Let Your Love Flow" duo sold out The Cameo Theater. So, hey, are you listening Birthplace of Country Music folks?

Naturally, fans of 49 Winchester would love to see them return next year. Will they? Stay tuned. Same goes for The Red Clay Strays, whose show during last month's Rhythm & Roots easily rated as one of the strongest.

But, how about roots rockers Social Distortion? They embrace rhythm and roots in ways that few existing bands do. Same for Dave Alvin. Last month, the Americana Music Association honored Alvin with its Lifetime Achievement award.

Speaking of The Blasters, its founder Dave Alvin helms this week's free MP3 download. Find an entire concert at https://archive.org/details/davealvin2024-08-31.MK4. SBD.FLAC24-48. Staged in August at Cat's Cradle in North Carolina, Alvin's band includes Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The show highlights 21 songs, from "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" to "Dallas" and "4th of July."
