Virginia ranks third for affordable used cars, study finds

ROANOKE, Va. -- Virginia is among the most affordable states in the country to purchase a used car, ranking third nationwide with an average cost of $27,043, according to a new study by AutoTechIQ. The analysis, which reviewed over 68,000 used car listings across all 50 states, highlights significant price variations within Virginia and across the nation.

In Virginia, Bedford emerged as the most affordable location for used cars, with an average price of $6,353, while Sterling claimed the title for the most expensive, with vehicles averaging $42,502. Popular brands such as Ford, Chevrolet, and Nissan dominate Virginia's used car market, with 307, 209, and 178 listings, respectively.

The study identified Washington as the most affordable state for used cars, with an average price of $24,673, while Alaska topped the list as the most expensive, with used cars averaging $35,487.

"With demand outstripping supply due to microchip shortages and supply chain disruptions, used car prices have risen steadily over the past decade," said Uwe Kleinschmidt, Founder and CEO of AutoTechIQ. "For buyers, finding a great deal has never been more important."

The study excluded exotic cars priced above $150,000 and analyzed listings from Cars.com to determine average costs by state. Virginia's affordability highlights its appeal to cost-conscious car buyers amid rising prices across the nation.
