10 Pokémon Ash Ketchum Should Have Caught, Ranked

Following the energetic Ash Ketchum and his best friend Pikachu, the original Pokémon anime has remained a beloved staple of the franchise for decades. Starting in the Kanto region, the home of Ash and his partner Pokémon, the two meet several new friends and Pokémon alike as they strive to grow even stronger. Team Rocket, a trio (later quartet) working to capture Pikachu, often find a way to follow Ash and company during their journey, acting as comedic relief most of the time.

Although Ash captures and evolves many Pokémon during his adventures, there are several that the Trainer meets and never catches. During his adventures, Ash wins several battles, but struggles or even loses some matches. Had Ash trained some other varieties of Pokémon, he might have found these battles to be easier.

10 Mimikyu Has a Unique Type Combination

The Only Known Ghost/Fairy-Type Pokémon

Mimikyu is a rather tragic Pokémon; it is friendly in nature and usually not prone to attack, yet its true form is deadly to gaze upon. Because of this, Mimikyu covers its true, shadow-like form with a costume that looks like Pikachu, the Mouse Pokémon being a popular and beloved creature among humans. The Disguise Pokémon sadly remains rather lonely, however, and it will only attack if its opponent dares to look under its rag in an attempt to save them. In the anime, Jessie befriends a Mimikyu and fixes its costume after it rips, earning herself a new ally during her time in Alola.

Currently, Mimikyu is the only known Pokémon with both the Ghost-type and the Fairy-type, making it a unique ally in battle. Ghost-types are usually weak to Dark-types, but with Mimikyu's Fairy-type, it has a special advantage over this other type. Because of its typing, it is also especially powerful against Dragon-type Pokémon, one of the most formidable types of Pokémon in the franchise. A Mimikyu could have provided Ash with especially powerful moves in his roster, including Shadow Ball and Dazzling Gleam.

9 Corviknight Evolves From a Humble Normal/Flying-type

Rookidee Is a Common Bird Pokémon From Galar

✕ Remove Ads

Each region in the Pokémon universe has a regional bird, a species of Pokémon that can be found all around the area. For Kanto, that Pokémon is Pidgey; for Sinnoh, Starly remains a common sight. In the Galar region, the Normal/Flying-type Rookidee can be found on the beginning routes of the game, usually one of the first Pokémon the player will meet. Though this little bird Pokémon is not a tough opponent in the beginning, it will later evolve into Corvisquire and then the formidable Corviknight later on.

Steel/Flying-type Pokémon have existed before, with Skarmory debuting in the Johto region. The two avian Pokémon have similar movepools, both able to learn moves such as Aerial Ace and Steel Wing. However, Corviknight is especially excellent in offensive combat, thanks to its great Defense. Lucky Trainers will also find that their Raven Pokémon has the Hidden Ability of Mirror Armor, which reflects stat-lowering and even Ability-related effects.

8 Meowstic's Powers Are Unique

The Constraint Pokémon Has Intense Psychic Ability

Espurr is a kitten-like Pokémon originating from the Kalos region, famous for its blank expression that rarely seems to change. Behind its eyes, however, Espurr is trying its hardest to control the intense psychic powers it contains, power that is much too enormous for it to have a proper grip of. Its burden appears to lessen a little upon evolving into Meowstic, though the Pokémon must continue to restrain itself. If Meowstic uses too much psychic power, it risks hurting itself in the process.

The movepool of Meowstic tends to vary a little depending on the Constraint Pokémon's gender. While a male Meowstic works more with defensive skills in order to protect itself and its allies, a female Meowstic will prioritize powerful attacks without mercy. Regardless, Meowstic in general would be an excellent ally for Ash, especially when dealing with Fighting-type foes. Their power is boundless, and they are able to learn intense moves such as Future Sight, one of the most renowned Psychic-type attacks.

7 Luxray Could Have Been Another Great Electric-type Ally

Ash's Experience With the Type Would Prove Useful

No matter what team Ash assembles for each region, he always has an Electric-type for his roster. That member is always Pikachu, his best friend and loyal partner Pokémon, and a legendary fighter capable of shocking attacks and great speed. Despite this, Ash often does not train other Electric-type Pokémon, even though his work with Pikachu could be used with other Electric-types. One such Pokémon that could have been an incredible ally is Shinx, the pre-evolution of Luxio and Luxray.

Ash has traveled alongside a Luxray before, that being the one owned by his Kalos companion Clemont. Luxray evolved during its adventure with Ash, and proved to be an incredible ally for the group when they needed it most. Had Ash found a Luxray of his own during his time in Kalos and even Sinnoh, Pikachu could have worked alongside the lion-like Pokémon with their power combined. Like Pikachu, Luxray can learn especially powerful moves such as Thunderbolt and Electro Ball, as well as Wild Charge and even Thunder.

6 Arcanine Is Loyal and Known for Its Legendary Speed

A Canine Pokémon Renowned for Its Bravery

Though there is a category for special Pokémon deemed as "Legendary Pokémon", one non-Legendary Pokémon's official Pokédex classification is just that. This other Legendary Pokémon is Arcanine, the evolved form of Growlithe, a common canine Pokémon from the Kanto region. Upon being exposed to a Fire Stone, the Puppy Pokémon will evolve into an Arcanine, and its Fire-type powers will increase in strength. Its Speed statistics will also grow in power, the most well-known aspect of the Legendary Pokémon.

With its phenomenal swiftness, Arcanine is able to learn the powerful move Extreme Speed. This canine Pokémon has remained beloved for generations, thanks to its graceful speed and aura of majesty; in Pokémon Legends Arceus, regional Fire/Rock-type forms of both Growlithe and Arcanine are present, and both are formidable fighters in battle. Thanks to its Fire-type, it is capable of learning moves such as Flare Blitz and Flamethrower, as well as other attacks such as Scorching Sands and Solar Beam. Growlithe has been sighted in other regions other than Kanto, making it a Pokémon Ash could have easily found.

5 Eevee's Special Ability Makes It a Versatile Companion

No Other Creature Is Like the Evolution Pokémon

Close

Aside from Pikachu, Eevee is one of the most popular Pokémon around and makes appearances in several regions, from Kanto to Kalos. This Normal-type Pokémon possesses a special ability, which is the power to evolve into seven different types. Eevee could originally only evolve into either a Fire-type, a Water-type or an Electric-type. Now, five other evolution possibilities exist for the Evolution Pokémon, including Ice-type Glaceon and Fairy-type Sylveon.

Since Eevee, despite its rarity, can be found in several regions, Ash has a great chance of finding one to join his team. Afterward, Eevee can either evolve into a certain type or wait to see what it may become in the future. Each member of the Eevee family, or "Eeveelution", can learn several of the same moves despite their unique typing, such as the healing move Refresh. No matter what Eevee evolves into, it is an excellent Pokémon for any Trainer.

4 The Alakazam Family Remains Extraordinary

The Psi Pokémon Can Predict Every Movement

Abra is a somewhat elusive Psychic-type Pokémon from the Kanto region, often found in grasslands. This Pokémon is often found sleeping, though it still levitates in midair. Its powers are still being used, however, while it slumbers, enough for the Psi Pokémon to teleport away from battle. Upon evolving into Kadabra and then Alakazam, Abra no longer needs to sleep as much and is able to make the most of its tremendous psychic power.

Although Alakazam was introduced in Generation I, the Psi Pokémon remains one of the most iconic Psychic-types in the entire roster today. This intelligent Pokémon never forgets anything it has learned or experienced, and uses this knowledge in every battle it partakes in. Though they can be hard to catch as an Abra due to their tendency to teleport, lucky Trainers will find themselves with a powerful ally. With the power of Mega Evolution, Alakazam can evolve into Mega Alakazam, and use its Psychic-type power to its full effect.

3 Hydreigon Could Have Been an Interesting Addition

A Dark/Dragon-type Known for Its Hostile Demeanor

Ash has only found companions in two Dark-type Pokémon, those being Incineroar and Larvitar. In the games, Dark-type Pokémon are often seen with the evil organization roaming each region, thanks to their tough attitude and ferocity in battle. One popular Dark-type Pokémon also happens to be a Dragon-type, making it an especially powerful creature. This Pokémon is Hydreigon, the ace of Ghetsis' team and one of the most fearsome Pokémon in the entire universe.

✕ Remove Ads

Hydreigon will attack anything that moves, the Pokédex stating that perhaps its ferocious nature stems from its dark past with humanity, who believed the Pokémon of the past to be wicked due to their looks and thus attacked them. Because of its brutality and bitterness towards humans (Ghetsis' own Hydreigon loathes the Team Plasma leader), the Brutal Pokémon is seen as one of the most difficult Pokémon to raise and train. Ash, however, is patient and always makes sure to treat Pokémon with compassion; it would not be unlikely for him to forge a lasting bond even with a creature as fearsome as Hydreigon.

2 Volcarona Is a Rare Pokémon From Unova

Few Can Meet This Fire/Bug-type

✕ Remove Ads

In the Unova region, Larvesta and its evolution, Volcarona, are two of the most rare Pokémon in the area. Larvesta can only be found as an Egg after the player completes the main game in Pokémon Black and Pokémon White; meanwhile, Volcarona can be found only once in the Relic Castle during the post-game of both the original games and their sequels. Aside from Sizzlipede and Centiskorch, Larvesta and Volcarona are the only currently known Fire/Bug-type Pokémon. Though the Sun Pokémon is very rare, it is also immensely powerful and one of the most sought-after Pokémon originating from the Unova region.

Though Ash began to rotate his Pokémon more in the Unova region, his team would have improved greatly if Volcarona had been discovered by the Trainer and his friends. Its unique typing makes it powerful against other Bug-types, though caution is advised when encountering Rock-type Pokémon. Regardless, Volcarona's Special Attack is astounding, and the Sun Pokémon is capable of learning powerful moves such as Bug Buzz and Fire Blast. Volcarona can learn a plethora of other moves as well, including Fly, Air Slash and even Wild Charge, making it a versatile battler.

1 Absol Is Mysterious and Extraordinarily Powerful

An Elusive Creature Hiding in the Mountains of Hoenn

In the past, Absol was viewed with bitterness and fear by the humans who spoke of it. This is due to the fact that whenever Absol, a normally elusive creature, shows itself to humanity, disaster soon follows. These people then believed the creature to be wicked and the cause of the sudden chaos that would befall their home, and drove the species deep into the mountains they appeared from. In reality, Absol is a noble Pokémon, and only appears before disaster to warn other beings before they are hurt.

Aside from moves such as Future Sight and Dark Pulse, Absol can also learn Water Pulse, Flamethrower and even Thunder. A companion such as Absol would have proved an excellent ally for Ash during his time in the Hoenn region, both in battle and for sensing the great natural disaster about to befall the region.
