PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A power outage occurred Wednesday morning at Rhode Island Hospital, according to a spokesperson from Lifespan.
The facility lost power around 8 a.m. and the backup generators were activated so "essential operational and patient care functions" could continue.
"We are now transitioning to a secondary power source from Rhode Island Energy and are moving away from the backup generators, which will take several hours to be fully operational," the spokesperson told 12 News.
The hospital is now on diversion, meaning new emergency patients will be sent to other facilities in the area.
