CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The deadly listeria outbreak that has already led to the recall of 10 million pounds of meat is now expanding to other potentially contaminated products, according to infectious disease specialists.
This week, the USDA released a document available online, detailing more than 300 pages of specific retailers, brands, and food items containing the recalled meats. The document allows consumers to look up certain products by label, but with so many now on the list, caution is advised when shopping at any of the affected stores.
Dr. Stephen Blatt of Ohio's TriHealth said most "healthy" people should be able to fend off listeria with no problems. He explained that exposure to this bacteria may be more common than people think, as it grows in cold temperatures. If you're still concerned, Blatt said cooking the meat could help kill the listeria.
Blatt also noted that listeria can be effectively treated if detected through a blood test. He advised being vigilant for symptoms that may mimic the flu.
The most important thing, Blatt said, was talking to your doctor when symptoms get worse.
