Former First-Round Quarterback Dead At 77

The football world is in mourning on Saturday morning following the death of longtime quarterback and NFL assistant coach Greg Landry.

The former Pro Bowl quarterback passed away on Friday night, according to a statement from the team. He was 77 years old.

"We join the NFL community in mourning the loss of former Lions quarterback and coach Greg Landry," the Lions posted on social media on Friday night.

Landry was the first quarterback selected in the 1968 NFL/AFL Draft, going No. 11 to the Lions following a standout career at UMass. He struggled to make much of an impact in the first three seasons of his career, before a career-best season in 1971. He completed over 52-percent of his passes for 2,237 yards with 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions en route to being name to the Pro Bowl and earning All-Pro honors.

It would be another three decades before the Lions fielded another Pro Bowl quarterback - Matthew Stafford in 2014. Landry played 11 seasons with the Lions and racked up 12,451 passing yards, 80 touchdowns and 81 interceptions.

He went on to play for the Baltimore Colts before a stint in the USFL eventually led him back to the league for one game with the Chicago Bears. For his career he threw for 16,052 yards with 98 touchdowns and 103 interceptions.

Following his playing days, Landry became the quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns in 1985. He eventually worked his way up to become the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 1988-92. He also served as the offensive coordinator for the Illinois Fighting Illini in 1993-94 before rejoining his old team, the Lions, as the team's quarterbacks coach.

Our thoughts are with his family.
