Community news: 'Thriller' event in Plainville returns for its 10th year

The Mega Metacomet Halloween Thriller returns on Halloween, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to benefit the Plainville Community Food Pantry.

The event includes six decorated homes on Metacomet Road in Plainville, including the home of the Bucci family at 62 Metacomet Road, where the YWCA New Britain School of Dance will perform Michael Jackson's "Thriller" every 20 to 25 minutes.

The performance will include more than 20 dancers, large decorations, lights, and inflatables.

From 9 to 10 a.m., Plainville Town Manager Michael Paulhus will be transformed into WWE's The Undertaker escorted by druids in full makeup and costume. State Rep. Francis Cooley will be dressed as WWE's Paul Bearer.

The Plainville Police Department will assist with traffic and road closures.

Admission is free but donations of canned and nonperishable food are suggested.

This is the 10th year of the event. More than 700 pounds of food was donated last year.

The Holy Trinity Church of Plantsville will hold its holiday fair Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be baked goods, tag sale items, basket raffle, Christmas Tree grab bag, as well as the Polish Kitchen with a complete dinner of Golumbki, pierogi, kielbasa, and sauerkraut.

The church is located at 200 Summer St.

Two Plainville High School faculty members were named "All-Stars" for October by the school district.

Allison Makucin and Tim Rankin, were recognized at the Oct. 15 Board of Education meeting for going above and beyond in modeling the school district's "Portrait of the Graduate" characteristics and demonstrating excellence in alignment with the school district's goals.

The Plainville Senior Center is starting up a new support group in November for those with vision impairments.

The first meeting will be held Nov. 5 at 10 a.m.

The group provides an opportunity for people with vision impairments to meet others experiencing similar challenges. Attendees will share information, ideas, concerns, ask questions, and discuss products and services.

The group welcomes all with low vision, no vision, and anything in between.
