Freezing temperatures could cause hypothermia, experts warn

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Tonight, our area is bundling up for the Arctic blast.

Experts say these low temperatures can cause hypothermia if you aren't careful.

Physician with Infirmary Health Michael Holland said with that in mind, these low digits shouldn't be taken lightly.

"Usually, one of the initial signs of hypothermia is shivering," Holland said. "Shivering is your body is trying to warm itself up by expanding energy in the muscles. That is dangerous from a standpoint of it can cause side effects from muscle damage, but dehydration is the big one."

As hypothermia progresses, Holland said it can also cause damage to your nervous system, heart, lungs and can even cause your skin to burn.

Studies show complications can occur in less than 15 minutes for someone who is out in these cold temperatures and is not taking proper caution.

To avoid these risks, make sure you're covered, especially your fingers, toes and head.

If you're trying to warm up after being out in the cold, Holland said getting in hot temperatures immediately after can do more harm than good.

"Some people think jumping into like a warm shower or a hot shower is the right thing to do, that can actually cause further complications," he said. "I advise not doing that if you do anything at all like lukewarm water to raise the core temperature would be best but not hot."

If you notice any signs of hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.
