FAYETTEVILLE -- A February jury trial is set for a Springdale man accused of taking advantage of an incompetent person.
John Backus, 50, is charged with soliciting money or property from an incompetent person.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge Wednesday and his jury trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 4.
Backus and Brandi Humphries, 48, of Springdale were arrested last month by Tontitown police. Humphries previously pleaded not guilty to the soliciting money charge. Her jury trial is scheduled for Jan. 21.
Police say they received a complaint from Casey Bradford, the grandson of an 89-year-old man with dementia, in relation to property that had been sold to Backus after the man started exhibiting mental health problems and was not in the right mind to make financial decisions, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Tontitown police.
