Yankees facing tricky injury news for ace pitcher Gerrit Cole

A day after Gerrit Cole was rocked in a Spring Training start for the New York Yankees, news took a turn for the worse.

Cole is slated to underdog diagnostic tests on his right (throwing) elbow, according to MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi in a post on X on Friday night. Morosi writes that "Cole's status should be clearer within the next couple of days."

The big right-hander allowed six earned runs on Thursday in his second start of the spring. He was removed from the game after 2.2 innings pitched against the Twins, although that could've appeared just to be due to his struggles and a pitch count that was up at 54.

No such luck, though, as Cole's status for Opening Day is now in doubt.

Any pitching setback during Spring Training is tough, because starting pitchers need enough time to get stretched out for full action when the regular season comes around.

Cole is a workhorse, averaging more than six innings per start across his entire major league career.

The 34-year old is sixth year of a nine-year, $324 million contract.

It's an injury that adds insult to injury for the Yankees, who already received negative injury news about rising star Luis Gil earlier in the spring.
