Teen arrested after driving stolen car towards crowd in Madison

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison Police arrested a 19-year-old teen after they said she drove away from police in a stolen vehicle in downtown Madison Sunday morning.

MPD said an officer pulled the driver over around 1:00 a.m. for driving on State Street and being in a stolen vehicle.

The driver allegedly accelerated towards a crowd of people and hit a squad car while driving away from a traffic stop.

She reportedly would not leave the vehicle or put it in park. The woman reportedly accelerated at a high rate of speed directly towards a squad car, decorative planter, and dozens of pedestrians on a nearby sidewalk.

The driver drove over tire deflation devices in the area. Officers followed from a distance until the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Highway 19 and River Road.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is handling the crash investigation.

She was arrested for failure to obey traffic signs, operating a motor vehicle without an owner's consent, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing, and resisting.
