NASA Wants A Gas Pipeline On The Moon. How Will It Work?

NASA is exploring a groundbreaking idea to make life on the Moon more sustainable for future astronauts. The plan involves building a pipeline on the Moon's South Pole to transport oxygen gas. This project, called the Lunar South Pole Oxygen Pipeline (L-SPoP), is part of NASA's efforts to support the Artemis program, which aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon.

The key challenge for NASA's Artemis program is finding ways to provide astronauts with the resources they need while reducing the need to constantly transport materials from Earth. One of the most important resources for astronauts is oxygen, which is needed for breathing and for use in rocket fuel. Extracting oxygen from the Moon's soil (called regolith) or from ice at the Moon's poles has already been a major focus of NASA's research.

NASA has invested heavily in technologies that can extract oxygen from lunar regolith and water from lunar ice. These systems are expected to be tested in a few years with hopes that they will be fully operational later this decade. However, the current method of storing the oxygen in tanks and transporting it to lunar habitats or facilities is energy-intensive and costly.

The L-SPoP project offers a solution to this problem. Instead of transporting heavy tanks of oxygen, NASA is proposing a pipeline system that would stretch about 5 kilometers on the Moon's South Pole. This pipeline would carry oxygen gas from the extraction sites to storage or processing centers near lunar bases, cutting down on the need to transport containers across the Moon's surface.

To make the pipeline, NASA plans to use materials found directly on the Moon. One of the main resources at the Moon's South Pole is aluminum, which could be used to create the pipeline's components. Using materials from the Moon itself will reduce the need for resources brought from Earth, making the project more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.

This modular pipeline design would also be adaptable and repairable, ensuring that it can evolve as needs change over time.
