Though city authorities planned for the militarized training center to open in 2023, fierce resistance - ranging from canvassing and petitions to tree sits and arson - delayed deforestation and Cop City's construction. Defense of the Weelaunee Forest continued despite severe repression including the assassination of eco-campaigner Manuel Terán who went by Tortuguita. Way behind schedule, the facility is finally built and will reportedly open soon.
This Saturday's the Day of the Forest Defender, the anniversary of Tortuguita's 2023 assassination.
Saturday's webinar's an opportunity to hear from organizers of the Stop Cop City struggle. Speakers are Mariposas Rebeldes' co-founder Abundia Alvarado and Community Movement Builders' founder Kamau Franklin, with Plant the Land c0-founder Laura Schleifer as moderator. Atlanta's lessons learned are critical for all involved in struggles for decolonization, abolition, and ecology, and especially stopping planned Cop Cities. Here's Stanley Heller's interview with Alvarado in preparation for the webinar.
