CULLOWHEE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Western Carolina University Catamounts will play their scheduled home football game against the Wofford University Terriers Saturday without fans after Tropical Storm Helene.
The university said Wednesday there are still several rescue and recovery efforts happening around the region and the North Carolina Department of Transportation has requested everyone in the area keep roads clear for emergency and disaster relief vehicles to get to the hardest hit areas.
Classes have been suspended until Friday, October 4, due to the aftermath of the storm.
"Campus officials are also sensitive to the impact this storm has had on our local community and the scarcity of resources in Jackson County, including water, food, electricity and fuel and do not want to take away those much-needed resources to host a typical game-day experience," the university said.
The university said it understands their fans will be disappointed, but they encourage their fans to help those who have been impacted by the storm.
The Catamounts will face the Terriers at 2:30 p.m.
A plethora of resources have been made available to help those in need across the Carolinas.
