BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A suspected arsonist is behind bars after officials say he admitted that he set a vehicle on fire. He allegedly admitted to the crime while being detained for trespassing.
According to the Baton Rouge Fire Department, fire investigators arrested Kadorius Thomas, 27, and booked him into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Monday, Oct. 7, on simple arson and criminal trespass charges.
The vehicle fire Thomas is accused of starting happened around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.
According to the fire department, crews arrived on the scene to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
Officials said fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and resulted in around $40,000 in damages.
While conducting a separate investigation, the Baton Rouge Police Department reported encountering Thomas on the property where the fire occurred.
Officials said police arrested him after employees at the property told them he was not authorized to be there.
According to the fire department, during an interview with the fire investigator, Thomas waived his Miranda rights and admitted to both trespassing and setting the vehicle on fire.
