Chilhowie man faces charges following Bristol break-in, fire

BRISTOL, Va. -- A Southwest Virginia man faces charges following a series of event early on Dec. 1.

Chase M. Guttin, 25, of Chilhowie, Virginia, is charged with burglary, attempted burglary, burning or destroying any other building or structure, destruction of property and intoxicated in public, according to city police.

At 2:36 a.m., Bristol Virginia patrol officers responded to a home on Fox Meadow Lane after a receiving a report of a male attempting to "kick" open a door to the home. When officers arrived at the location three minutes later, the male had already left without gaining entry to the home.

While the responding officer was speaking with the resident, he heard glass breaking nearby. The officer ran to the location of the noise and discovered a fire coming from the first floor of a home on Piedmont Ave., and a male screaming from the second floor inside of the home. The man was unable to get out of the home because of the smoke on the first floor.

Officers at the scene were able to get him out of the home through a second-floor window. The Bristol Virginia Fire Department responded to the location and extinguished the fire.

Video surveillance footage from the Fox Meadow Lane home was reviewed and officers determined that the male found in the Piedmont Ave. home was the same person who attempted to force open the door at the Fox Meadow Lane home.

The front door to the Piedmont Ave. home was found forced open which was unoccupied at the time. The male found in the home was identified as Chase Guttin of Chilhowie Virginia. He was taken into custody.
