Defending VHSL Class 2 girls basketball state champion Wise County Central opened the 2024-25 season like they ended the last one - triumphantly.

Senior guard Emmah McAmis went for 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block as the Warriors rolled to a 77-23 victory over Rye Cove in the first round of the Powell Valley National Bank Tip-Off Classic.

Abbie Jordan (11 points, three steals), Kaelyn Dales (10 points, seven steals) and freshman Aubrey Moore (10 points, four assists, four steals) also played well.

Central led 21-7 after one quarter and 40-14 at halftime. The Warriors shot 52.6 percent from the field and held a 36-22 rebounding edge.

Rye Cove committed 33 turnovers and did not have a player score in double digits. Jalynn Rogers had eight points, three blocks and three steals.

Addy Bays led the way with 23 points as the Twin Springs Titans opened the season by trouncing Patrick Henry.

Makenzie Gillenwater (17 points), Emma Ross (16 points) and Aubrey Meade (10 points) also scored in double digits.

Twin Springs led 31-2 after one quarter.

Sophomore Kinsley Counts scored 10 of Patrick Henry's 19 points.

Daniel Boone 61, Tennessee High 57

Lillie Walter led Daniel Boone with 17 points as the Trailblazers defeated Tennessee High in a back-and-forth game at Viking Hall.

Boone trailed 15-12 after one quarter, led 39-25 at halftime, led just 49-47 after three quarters and held on down the stretch.

THS (5-2) had its five-game winning streak snapped.

Jasmine Jones led the Bristolians with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Addi Moore (15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals) also played well.

Volunteer 61, Sullivan East 55

The season is young, but Volunteer and Sullivan East played a classic on Tuesday night in Bluff City as the Falcons prevailed in double overtime.

East (0-2) grabbed a 45-44 lead in regulation as freshman Emma Whitaker scored on a layup with 25 seconds left and a few moments later drew a charge from a Volunteer ballhandler.

However, East was called for a looseball foul with 0.7 seconds remaining and Volunteer's Chloe Anderson hit two free throws.

However, a lane violation negated the charity toss and the game headed into OT.

Whitaker hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the extra session to knot the score at 51. The Patriots were whistled for a blocking foul with 1.5 seconds left, but Volunteer missed both free throw attempts.

In the second OT, East led 55-54 before Volunteer closed the game on a 7-0 run.

Sophie Johnson's 17 points were tops for the Patriots, while Emma Whitaker (14 points) and Asia Cairns (11 points) also scored in double digits.

Kristalyn Dowell wowed the crowd to the tune of 20 points as the Graham G-Girls opened the season by blasting the Bluefield Beavers.

Ella Dales (17 points) and Kandance Bowman (11 points) also played well in the win.

Harlan (Ky.) 65, Lee High 45

Kinley Huff had 19 points, six assists and four steals, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Lee High Generals lost in the opening game of the Powell Valley National Bank Tip-Off Classic.

Savanna Parsons added 11 points and six rebounds for Lee.

Harlan received 26 points from Kylie Noe.

Carter Jones scored 27 points as West Ridge won.

Kyleigh Mitchell's 14 points and Addison Bunn's 11 points also led the way for the Wolves.

Rural Retreat 25, Marion 24

The Rural Retreat Indians edged Marion for a non-district victory.

Rural Retreat is 1-1.

Macy Osborne led Marion with 13 points.

Galax 50, Chilhowie 13

The Galax Maroon Tide had no trouble putting Chilhowie away.

BOYS

Tennessee High 82, Daniel Boone 38

Colin Brown had another quality night at the office with 26 points as the Tennessee High Vikings improved to 7-0.

Reed Miller (18 points) and Braden Howard (12 points) were also top scorers for THS. Zander Phillips added eight points.

Marion 61, Rural Retreat 22

Caden Burchett fired in 23 points - outscoring Rural Retreat's entire team by himself - as the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes opened the season with a blowout win.

Sophomores Ethan Hylton (12 points) and Hayden Hall (10 points) also played well in the win. Marion closed the first half on an 18-6 run and opened the second half with an 18-2 scoring surge.

Rural Retreat (0-2) did not have a scorer in double digits. Trever Shelton had eight points for the Indians.

Cole Caywood (20 points) and Cade Caywood (18 points) led the way as the Patrick Henry Rebels topped Twin Springs for a season-opening win.

Nine different players scored for PH, which opened a 48-18 halftime lead.

Clay Ross led Twin Springs 15 points, while Jacoby Dunn finished with 10 points.

The duo of Thomas Ridlehuber (18 points) and Eli Hubbard (17 points) were tops for East.

Elizabethton 59, West Ridge 48

The West Ridge Wolves fell to 6-2 with a road loss.
