IoT Processors: 'Everyone Is Experimenting with Adding Intelligence' - EE Times

Earlier this fall, EE Times caught up with Vikram Gupta, SVP and GM for IoT processors at Synaptics, to discuss what has been happening at the company a year after it announced its new strategy in IoT. In the discussion, we talked about the impact of AI, to which he said, "In the context of the emergence of AI in IoT, everyone is experimenting with adding intelligence." This, he added, provides a self-fulfilling momentum for growth.

The IoT is a key part of Synaptics' renewed strategy, and its most recent quarterly earnings for Q1 of its fiscal year 2025 (ending Sept. 28) showed that its core IoT product revenue grew 55% year over year in the quarter -- and had seen double digit sequential growth for three consecutive quarters. On revenue of $258 million in the quarter, core IoT drove $60 million of this figure.

In the interview, Gupta talks about the key applications they are seeing for IoT processors, including the significance of audio and vision in enabling intelligent IoT. While the company's initial family of processors are Linux-based, he talks about the next set of processors that will be focused on embedded RTOS. He also alludes to what might be next from Synaptics in the IoT processor space.
