Mets predicted to land $131 million superstar after missing out on Juan Soto

The New York Mets were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. They are expected to be active in free agency as they look to make another deep postseason run in 2025.

While predicting landing spots for the top free-agent pitchers, Newsweek's Zach Pressnell predicted the Mets would land superstar Blake Snell, but they would do so after missing out on New York Yankees star Juan Soto.

"Blake Snell will be heading where the money is. The New York Mets are set to lose a few starting pitchers, which puts them in the perfect position to add Snell," wrote Pressnell. "Owner Steve Cohen is going to be aggressively spending this offseason. If the Mets miss on Soto (which I think they will), they will be the heavy favorites to land Snell on the long-term deal that he's looking for."

Snell signed a two-year, $62 million deal with the San Diego Padres late last offseason. The deal included a player opt-out option after 2024, and Snell has exercised it in hopes to sign a long-term deal. The 2023 Cy Young Award winner struggled early, but was phenomenal in the second half of the season.

Spotrac projects Snell to sign a five-year, $131 million deal in free agency. The Mets are not shy about spending big in free agency. They will be in on Soto as well as trying to keep Pete Alonso around. Soto figures to sign a $500 million deal this winter. If the Mets don't sign him they could afford both Snell and Alonso.
