The Oakland Athletics are competing at Oakland Coliseum for the final time in franchise history. In an effort to honor this special day, the club invited back a familiar face to sing the national anthem.
On Thursday afternoon, Cy Young winner Barry Zito was welcomed back to throw out the first pitch. Before he did that, he sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" for a packed crowd in Oakland.
Zito isn't known for his angelic voice, but make no mistake about it, the three-time All-Star absolutely nailed it.
MLB fans raved about Zito's performance, calling it one of the best moments of the 2024 season. Honestly, we'd have to agree with that statement.
The fact that Zito got to be a part of the final A's game in Oakland is pretty awesome.
In eight seasons with the Athletics, Zito owned a 3.58 ERA with 1,098 strikeouts and a 102-63 record. He was considered a fan favorite for the majority of his time in Oakland.
Zito wasn't the only notable A's player honored before the game this Thursday. The fans were also able to see Rickey Henderson and Dave Stewart on the diamond.
While this season may go down as one to forget for the Athletics, their fans will never forget this emotional day.
